| I
teach to a syllabus which consists of Kihon (Basics),
kumite (sparring) and Kata
(combined moves against an imaginary opponent or multiple opponents). As a total
novice we teach you first how to enter the Do-Jo
(training hall) and leave also we teach you the etiquette that should be in every
Do-Jo, then when the training starts we teach you
how to walk in a stance Zenkutsu dachi (front stance)
this is a very important stance as it is strong from a frontal attack and is a
very stable and movable body posture but is very hard to keep the posture until
the muscles are built up. As well as this walk and stance we teach how to
Mawatte (turn).Once this is mastered we then start to teach you the syllabus.
Kihon - consists of blocking, punching and kicking
techniques. Kumite - there are various types of Kumite
we teach them at different stages. As a novice we would teach Kihon-Kumite
(basic sparring) for example :- some one punches to your head at a speed you can
safely see and move away from if you felt uncomfortable with, you would step back
do an Age-uke (a rising block) and a retaliate using
Gyakazuki (a reverse punch). Ippon-Kumite
- (1step sparring) again this is done with basic punches blocks an strikes but
a little more advanced as you are a little more free to put in any block and any
counter and also use Teisubaki (sliding motion side
ways avoiding attack). JIYU-Kumite - both partners
now stand in a semi free style stance, the appointed attacker will attack but
if he/she sees the defender move he/she may follow the defender. The defender
once they have retaliated, the next attack is on it's way. Kumite
- (free fighting) both faces each other in fighting stance and can both attack
and defend. Kata - combined moves. | 8TH

… All the above is to pass your first grading, but I some times throw the odd
surprise in to see if you have learned anything in class sessions as we also do
other things outside the syllabus.
| I
also teach in the class Ju-Jitsu as this is apart of Wado-Ryu, this side of the
martial art is leg sweeps, wrist locks and throwing techniques by using the opponents
own speed power and motion. For a quick easy example someone places there flat
hand against your chest (like they were going to push you away) place both your
hands flat on there hand now with one leg step back and bow watch the result of
the opponent. That is a very simple move and we bring this in to self defence
purposes too for any person of age, size or sex. Judo throws are also apart of
the karate I teach and we also teach the break falls too for your safety not only
in the Do-Jo but also out side in the street (as you never know how much the attacker
knows ) After a while, once you have got to grips with the clubs training methods
and we see your confidence has grown, we start adding weapons in to your Kumite.
We start you off against a stick at first and work up to a knife.
I hope
this has given you an insight in to our martial art school and there is more we
teach that has not been written. Because of where we train there is a car park
provided, refreshments available for people who want to watch and for those who
have finished training, a kiddies soft play for if you want to bring the family
along and who do not wish to train. The kiddies soft play and refreshments, provided
by the Little Rascal Centre at a small charge, is a separate part to the club.
